What fuel really costs you

Fuel is usually the largest running cost of a vehicle and the one people underestimate most, because it leaves the wallet in small amounts. Converting it to a cost per kilometre and an annual figure makes the number impossible to ignore.

Formula

Fuel cost = (distance ÷ mileage) × fuel price

  • distance — kilometres driven in the period
  • mileage — km per litre your vehicle actually delivers
  • Cost per km = fuel price ÷ mileage

Cost per kilometre is the number to remember

At ₹105 a litre and 15 km per litre, every kilometre costs ₹7. Driving 1,500 km a month therefore costs ₹10,500, or about ₹1.26 lakh a year — comparable to a mid-sized EMI.

Once you know your cost per km, any trip can be priced in seconds. A 40 km daily commute is ₹280 a day, roughly ₹6,000 a month for twenty-two working days.

Use real mileage, not the brochure figure

Certified mileage is measured under controlled conditions. City driving with traffic, air conditioning, and short trips typically delivers 20-30% less, and the gap is largest for small-capacity petrol engines.

Measure it yourself: fill the tank, note the odometer, refill after a few hundred kilometres, and divide distance by litres added. Two or three such cycles give a figure you can trust.

What actually improves mileage

Correct tyre pressure, steady speeds around 60-80 km/h, gentle acceleration, servicing on schedule, and removing unnecessary weight all help measurably. Idling in traffic and aggressive braking hurt the most.

A realistic 10% improvement on a ₹1.26 lakh annual bill is about ₹12,600 a year — free money for habits that cost nothing.

Fuel is not the whole running cost

Add insurance, servicing, tyres, parking, and depreciation to understand what a vehicle really costs. Depreciation alone often exceeds fuel in the first few years of a new car.

When comparing vehicles or fuels, compare total cost per kilometre. A cheaper fuel with a costly conversion or higher maintenance can end up more expensive than it appears.
